Otters Back in Rotterdam
There’s an otter hidden inside R-otter-dam, and we think there should be one in the water too. We’re restoring habitats, cleaning waterways, and making room for otters to thrive in our city again.

For decades, otters vanished from Rotterdam's rivers, canals and waterways. We're a local nonprofit working to change that — through habitat restoration, clean-water advocacy, wildlife monitoring and school programmes. A city where otters thrive is a city with healthier water for everyone.
Frequently Asked Questions
An otter gliding through a Rotterdam canal would mean we've built a cleaner, wilder, more living city. Whether you give an hour, a euro or your voice, you're part of bringing that future closer.
Protect and restore Rotterdam’s waterways for otters
We're calling on the City of Rotterdam to commit to otter-friendly waterways: restoring natural banks, improving water quality, and creating safe wildlife crossings along key canals and rivers.
Otters are an indicator species — when they return, it means the water is healthy enough for fish, birds, plants and people too. Their absence is a warning we shouldn't ignore.
Add your name to show local leaders that residents want a greener, wilder city. Together we can make space for otters to come home to Rotterdam.
